Forests and inland Lloret
In order to delve deeper into the rich natural environment around Lloret de Mar, visitors are invited to extend their horizons and discover the diversity of landscapes in the surrounding Selva county: the pre-coastal mountain range running from the Montseny massif to the Far escarpment, the Selva plain and the coastal mountain range to the north and south of Lloret.
In geological terms, the coastal mountain range was mostly formed by eruption material and it may have been originally submerged in the sea. Fault-lines created the famous rugged shoreline.
The extraordinarily beautiful and rich vegetation, of great scientific interest, comes from the combination of a mild, damp climate and proximity to the Pyrenean massif, which affords shelter from the cold north wind and allows warm, rain-carrying east breezes to reach our shores.
The cork oak and Holm oak woods on the inland plain gradually give way to plantations of chestnut trees, Algerian oaks and downy oaks as we approach the coast.
At the shoreline proper, the vegetation exudes the seductive fragrances of myrtle, heather and rockroses that blend with the scent of the sea and the pine trees.
The area around Lloret is also the habitat of many different species of birds and small rodents. The forests abound with wild mushrooms, asparagus and aromatic herbs, which provide visitors with an ideal opportunity to combine a hike in the country with some seasonal collecting.
