 Description

The Modernist cemetery in Lloret de Mar was designed at the end of the nineteenth century and was built during the early years of the twentieth. It is, without doubt, a site of undeniable interest providing a broad perspective of funerary art of the time.

The official inauguration of the site was on 2 November 1901, after which date several renowned architects and sculptors have created works for the cemetery: Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Antoni M. Gallissà i Soqué, Vicenç Artigas i Albertí, Bonaventura Conill i Montobbio, Ismael Smith, Eusebi Arnau, etc.

In the creation of the cemetery, it is worth highlighting the role played by private individuals who financed both the overall structure and the tombs. It is also worth mentioning here that at the beginning of the twentieth century, there were a lot of "Indianos" who had made their fortune in the Americas and who, once they had established their social and financial status, decided to return to their home town. Once they came home, they would have a luxurious house built, which, apart from letting them show off their new-found wealth, allowed them to live well in the land of the living while they had a sumptuous mausoleum built; another sign of having arrived and one which, in this case, would allow them to carry on living well in the land of the dead.

The cemetery in Lloret de Mar could be considered to be one of the most significant examples of Catalan funerary art of the Modernist era.
